HONEST PROVIDER REVIEW

Sakura Mobile review: is it worth it for Japan?

Sakura Mobile is one of the few Japanese providers built for foreigners — everything in English, a travel eSIM with truly unlimited 5G, and SIMs for residents too. It’s a great fit for some people and the wrong call for others. Here’s the honest version, including when a cheaper eSIM beats it.

THE HONEST VERDICT

Pick Sakura ifyou want everything in English, truly unlimited 5G, or a reliable name for a longer stay — and you don’t mind paying more. Skip it if you just need light data for a short trip; a cheaper eSIM (Airalo, Ubigi) will do.

Pros

  • Full English support — sign-up, billing, help, all in English
  • Truly unlimited 5G (au), no daily speed cap on that plan
  • Japan-based company; reliable for arrivals and longer stays
  • Both travel eSIM and resident SIM options

Cons

  • Costs more than Airalo / Ubigi / many data-only eSIMs
  • Billed in JPY (foreign-card fees/FX may apply)
  • The cheaper 4G plan throttles after ~3GB/day
  • Overkill if you only need light data for a short trip

Travel eSIM: the plans

Sakura’s travel eSIM comes in two flavors. The 5G Unlimited plan (au) is genuinely unlimited at high speed — from around ¥5,000 for 7 days (indicative), scaling up to about a month. The cheaper 4G plan (docomo) gives high speed up to ~3GB/day, then slows to ~200kbps and resets the next day — fine for maps and messaging, not for heavy streaming. Both install before you fly and activate when you land.

Prices are indicative and billed in JPY — always check the live price before you buy.

Honestly: cheaper eSIMs exist

If you just need data for a short or light trip, a data-only eSIM like Airalo or Ubigiis usually cheaper. What you give up is English support and (on Airalo’s “unlimited”) a ~3GB/day cap. Not sure which fits you? Our 2-minute eSIM check compares them honestly by your trip length and data — no ranking spam.

For residents, not just tourists

Just moved to Japan? Sakura also offers SIMs with a real Japanese number and English support — useful right after arrival, before you’re set up for a cheaper Japanese-only carrier. See the trade-offs in our resident SIM guide, and remember you can switch later (MNP) without losing your number.

FAQ

Is Sakura Mobile's eSIM really unlimited?

The 5G plan (au network) is genuinely unlimited high-speed data with no daily cap. The cheaper 4G plan (docomo) gives high speed up to about 3GB/day, then slows to ~200kbps, resetting daily. Pick the 5G plan if you stream or tether a lot.

Is Sakura Mobile more expensive than Airalo or Ubigi?

Yes, usually. Sakura costs more than data-only eSIMs like Airalo or Ubigi. You pay for full English support, a Japan-based company, and truly unlimited 5G. For light or budget trips, a cheaper eSIM is often the better fit.

Does Sakura Mobile have English support?

Yes. Sakura Mobile is built for foreigners — sign-up, support, and billing are handled in English, which is its main advantage over cheaper Japanese carriers.

Can residents use Sakura Mobile, not just tourists?

Yes. Besides the travel eSIM, Sakura Mobile offers SIMs for residents with a Japanese phone number and English support — handy right after you move, before you're ready for a cheaper Japanese-only carrier.
